Sacramento travel guide

Sacramento, situated halfway between San Francisco and South Lake Tahoe, is California’s capital city. Its atmosphere surprisingly simple and tranquil Sacramento features many parks, murals and a picturesque old town centre, Old Sacramento, which reproduces the city at the time of the Far West with the addition of souvenir shops. It is like stepping back in time to the Californian gold rush period: historic buildings, museums and monuments. Everything has been kept as it was including the wooden sidewalks, horse-drawn carriages and the Mississippi-style riverboats. The city originally started as a supply town for gold miners that inundated the area after the first gold was found in 1848 in Coloma just 30 miles east of Sacramento. News travelled fast and fortune hunters came by the thousands from all over the world to Sacramento, the migration was so great that it has been recorded as the largest human migration in history. In 1850 California became a state and Sacramento its capital four years later. The city developed very fast and today is one of the 10 fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the US.
Sacramento is a very pretty city with tree-lined streets and many parks, the ideal place for people who enjoy the great outdoor as they can be sure to find plenty of action such as hiking, trekking, mountain biking on the surrounding hills, as well as whitewater rafting and fishing in the American and Sacramento Rivers. There is also a multitude of urban attractions including museums and historic sites, trendy shops, good fashionable restaurants and a very lively nightlife.
