San Diego places of interest

When visiting San Diego take time to walk around the Gaslamp Quarter, historic San Diego’s district that has been recently restored, go shopping in the original looking Horton Plaza, large shopping centre built in many levels with a mix of architectural styles (Spanish, Byzantine and modern). Five miles northwest of Downtown is Old Town, old Spanish-style quarter with the picturesque red brick-wall houses, which was one of the first Spanish settlements in California. There, visit Washington Square and the Bazar del Mundo, the exact copy of a 16th century’s Mexican market place with a series of shops overlooking a perfectly kept square decorated with flower beds.
San Diego has the world’s largest Zoo with over 4000 animals living within a contest that closely reproduces their natural habitat.
Don’t miss the Ferry Landing Place on Coronado Island, the old embarcadero that has been turned into a commercial centre from where to enjoy one of the best views over San Diego. Another good panoramic spot is the Cabrillo National Monument set on a hill.
The 52-mile scenic drive around the city is a nice way to visit San Diego by car; Starting near Broadway, it goes across Balboa Park, Old Town, Mission Bay, Aquatic Park, then gets to the top of Soledad hill and around the Cabrillo National Monument for then descending back to Broadway via Shelter Island.
San Diego has great beaches, Pacific Beach and Sunset Cliffs are ideal for surfing. La Jolla is a renowned seaside location north of San Diego, famous for the expensive shops and the art galleries along Prospect Street, but also for the beaches in particular La Jolla Cove is one of the most photographed beaches in San Diego for its scenery including grassy parks, crystal waters and sandstone cliffs. The Children’s Pool, sitting south of La Jolla Cove, is a great spot to admire the community of sea lions and seals basking in the sun. The place to go for the buzz and the nightlife is Mission Beach, although not as beautiful as other beaches in the area it offers plenty of attractions including shops, bars, restaurants and the Belmont Park’s world-famous wooden roller coaster.

San Diego has a great selection of Theme Parks such as Legoland, Sea World and the Wild Animal Park in La Jolla’s surrounding areas. They are all great fun places for people travelling with children.
Finally a trip south of the border is a fun thing to do. Tijuana is only 23 miles south of San Diego and is one of the most exciting Mexican cities with wonderful restaurants, great shops and lively nightlife.
